Montana has a strong pulse.

The Prairie Star reports that Montana accounted for 40.3 percent of the nations lentil crop in 2012.  In the Big Sky State lentils average 11 CWT per acre and brought an average price of $23.70, bringing $64,393,000 into the State last year.  And with some major food industry players showing increased interest in the market demand is set to continue to rise.  It seems people are eating a lot more hummus these days!

But that is not the only reason that Farmers in the region are turning to Pulse in such large numbers.  Pulse crops capture Nitogen and help with soil health, so in rotation they can help add yield to Wheat and other crops.
